License plate recognition?

Mon Apr 22, 2019 4:26 pm

Hello, I want to make my gate to be opened by car's license plate. Is it possible with Pi Zero? And what camera should I use?

Welcome to the forum,

I know this https://github.com/openalpr/openalpr ran OK on a PI 2 but not sure about the Zero.

How much is the screen refresh speed? I mean have you tested on a live video or you tested it with images?

Just a tip. Most commercial and law enforcement Number Plate Readers work in the IR spectrum. Allows them to disregard plastic covers, reflective (visible) paint, etc. Interesting fact, all 'genuine' number plates must be 100% readable in the IR spectrum.

I would use the RPi camera, as it has superb IR sensitivity, and any one of the various image processing libraries available.

Why read the number plate for just one car access? Consider RFID or even simpler, Bluetooth detection of your personal smartphone.

Although, machine vision projects are very cool.
..the only thing worse than a stupid question is a question not asked.

For Pi0, I am not sure, but there is a super-simple way to get ANPR with a Raspberry Pi4. The Pi4 is quite powerful and the integration with Plate Recognizer is straight-forward. Give it a try!

You can easily achieve this, visit https://platerecognizer.com/blog/automa ... omparison/, the website is all about Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) or Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) software

Good day!

I’m expanding my home automation and am looking at using a Pi4 and RPI camera. This is my first project with this technology. The use case I m looking at is to place the camera looking at my driveway, recognize the license plate and have this integrated (using mQTT?) to SmartThings to open my garage door and door to the house. I‘m in an area where presence sensors are not reliable. Does this sound Reasonable?

Thanks

ANPR is automatic number plate recognition, also known as Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR). It is a system that is capable of reading vehicle number plates from images captured. There are three fundamental components that make ANPR successful
Camera
Camera setup
ANPR engine.
Read about them in details in https://platerecognizer.com/blog/camera-setup/

The link that you provided brings me to platerecognizer.com. It seems like there is a need to purchase the SDK in order to perform this task. Please correct me if I am wrong.
On the other hand, Is there a website that you can recommend such that i can get my pi4 and my picamera to perform ALPR?
Thanks in advance.
