Music-specific OS with bluetooth

Tue Mar 26, 2019 1:23 pm

Hi,

First sorry if there are spelling errors, I'm not ... well you know the end I already read it million times here.

I recently had an idea (actually this morning). Someday I will buy a bluetooth soundbar and I think it could be cool to have a touchscreen to select the music I want to play. I found that a RPI should be a nice idea for that project (with the official touchscreen. Why this touchscreen... I just like it ?).

I know that RPI 3b+ have bluetooth which is what I need. Nevertheless, my kid is pretty young (and I'm not that smart), so I want something easy (you know kiss) like 1 folder for me and 1 folder for him and a "random" button.

This is why I am looking for a not-looking-like-a-computer-os OS. More like a music specific OS (is it even the correct way to explain it ?).
I found :
OSMC : Well I already used it for a media player, it works for sure but it is not optimized for music. And I don't like the UI (don't kill me plz)
http://www.rpimusicplayer.com/ : Haven't found anything about Bluetooth
PI MusicBox : Best idea ever... But it has no compatibility with bluetooth (you are kidding me ?)
Volumio : Best idea ever... But it has no compati... DAMN !!!!

This is what I am looking for :

RPI => USB => USB flash drive with music
RPI => Bluetooth => Soundbar
RPI => Wifi => This is useful only to remotely access the USB flash drive to add/remove music (not mandatory)

My kid's finger => RPI touchscreen screen => Select "*insert your kid's name here*"'s folder => Select "random" => RPI plays music on the soundbar
My kid's finger => Leave a mark on the screen because of his dirty fingers... Ok, I need to talk to my wife before I begin this project (just kidding...)

No need to be controlled with my phone (actually I DON'T want to use my phone to contrôle it, I really want that touchscreen for my kid).
Oh, btw, the screen will be on the wall (https://www.google.com/search?q=rpi+tou ... l&tbm=isch)
As you have guessed correctly I am not an expert so I am unfortunately not able to develop that thing...

Does anyone an idea for a "nice looking" and "easy to use for a kid" OS for my RPI ? It can be a web UI if it is simple to use with a touchscreen.

Please don't use super-technical words in your answers ;)

thanks everybody ;)

To me, for a music only system, a command line program like moc might do most of what you are thinking of, no GUI necessary.

http://moc.daper.net/about

(If you use the RaspberryPi O/S (Raspbian) it comes with bluetooth access.)

Wow this is not what i call "nice looking" or "easy to use for a kid" unless you have more informations to give ? It even frighten me https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_on_Console. I don't think my child will use this.

Also, I said that I want something like "folder => Random", but of course I also want to chose a specific song.
And to be more precise : because the system will be with a touchscreen, it won't have a keyboard or a mouse when it will be fully ready and installed (i could plug one for debugging maybe but everything related to "playing music" should be done with touchscreen).

That's a lot of things I want...

Sounds like an iPod to be honest - one of the simplest GUI in existence for playing music...

You could hide the whole Pi behind LibreElec / OSMC - and though 'media' in this sense includes films / videos etc you do not have to load them onto the Pi.

Control is designed for the 10 foot point of view, so its simple (but not quite as simple as you want).

It is indeed exactly as an ipod but way more convenient due to the size of the screen. And if someday I want to make anything else with the RPI (recalbox, NAS, whatever...), I can.

I thought I haven't found what I was looking for but your answer makes me think that it doesn't exist...

Look into RuneAudio or Volumio.

There are also a number of Linux compatible music players that have full-screen "Party" modes. Do a search for best Linux music players.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Strange, I have already checked Volumio (check my first post, it is already written). You mean it have a way to connect with bluetooth on the RPI ? I might have misread... Can you send me a link where they say how to connect to a bluetooth soundbar (or other equipment to play music) ?
I have found that for RuneAudio : http://www.runeaudio.com/forum/bluetoot ... t5807.html, have it changed ?

The problem with music players (those I have found) is that they don't have a sweet and easy UI when it comes to choose your music. very often you need to come back to the file manager to select your musics or to actualize the list.

I don't want those kind of UI : https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/01/bes ... untu-linux, it's not really nice for a small touchscreen. I really like the RuneAudio/Volumio UI (it's what I am looking for) but haven't found a way to make it work with bluetooth yet.

Looks like Volumio does not directly support Bluetooth speakers BUT folk have got it working for example this post has it working with pulseaudio https://volumio.org/forum/volumio-bluet ... 10422.html

This may work directly https://geeks-r-us.de/2017/08/18/blueto ... pberry-pi/

Failing that an audio to Bluetooth transmitter would add £16-40 to the project.

I know the latter double the cost of the Pi but you may think it worth it for the simple GUI.

Seems not that easy. I will certainly use osmc/kodi and get a skin for touchscreen.
