raspberrypi.org API?

Sat Mar 23, 2019 8:48 pm

Hi all,

I'm the author of the WiringPi::API Perl wrapper to Gordon's WiringPi, the RPI::WiringPi Perl distribution that uses *WiringPi::API* and aggregates several other Perl distributions for sensors, ICs etc that I've also written.

Recently, I've teamed up with someone who maintains PiFlash, a Perl distribution that aids in the flashing of SD cards for the Raspberry Pi.

I suggested to Ian, the author of *PiFlash*, that it would be useful if the software could automatically fetch images from the Raspberry Pi download site. We bantered a bit, and although it'd be trivial to scrape (or just use hard links), things change from time-to-time.

My question is thus: Does the Raspberry Pi website have a back end API that could be used to glean this information? If not, is there a master list of all downloads that could be exposed on the web linking the varying versions to actual download files (JSON for example).

If not, and this is something that interests people, I'd be glad to donate some time to help with such an implementation.

Could you pull the files from the archive?

http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/images/

No idea one term if they will move the lite etc in here.

Are you aware of the 'back end' server that serves the images pointed to by the official Downloads 'front end'?

Archives of everything ever released...

@AndyRoo - the Raspbian Lite images are there too. Navigate to https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian_lite/images/

This looks very much what I'm looking for, particularly the JSON files.

I'd never run into the archive site in the past directly.

I'll do some scouring to get an understanding of everything, and go from there.

Thanks much!

There's also an RSS feed for download updates

If you are going to build a service around this perhaps check, via email, with someone in authority at RPF that it is a 'stable' interface before committing to using it?

For example, there has recently been a change in the way that Raspbian is packaged, going from 2 versions to 3... With consequent changes to naming.

All responses in this thread have come from other users, not speaking on behalf of the RPF organisation.

I was just about to ask about the stability of the data. I've got an email in already, so I'll post back when I receive any information.

Otherwise, if anyone "official" here knows, please feel free to add your two cents.

@B.Goode - thanks for that. I’d never actually explored the parent directories  as I only used this once last year and bookmarked it for some reason

There are no plans to change anything right now, but there's no committent to keeping everything the same either.

As others have said, downloads.raspberrypi.org is probably your best bet.
Only Raspbian images are properly maintained - almost everything else is mostly there just in case anybody still needs it.
