Making a Gaming mouse?

Mon Oct 29, 2018 7:51 pm

Hey everyone,

First time post, I'm creating my own gaming mouse with my own 3d printed design and i'm looking for a good way to actually put a sensor buttons and scroll wheel in there.

I was wondering it would be possible to create this with a Raspberry Pi? And if so, how hard would this be / would this be low latency enough to be utilized as a gaming mouse? :|

Thanks in advance!

Probably not. I think you'd be better off with a micro controller, or gutting an existing mouse and using that in your casing.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Disregarding how you would achieve it, the Pi is not "real time" enough for this use. You may find your mouse cursor several dozen milliseconds behind your movements - disastrous for gaming in anything requiring precision.

But would it be?
Mice use USB, there is some time used up there.
A mouse would have sensor(SPI) to USB interface micro.
Would direct SPI be faster?
With Pi's we can test this, thanks to the IO header.

The extra advantage is once you make a mouse the same tech can be used for robot navigation?
The Pi can have up to 5 SPI chips with normal chip selects.
Some robot guys have used mouse sensors as mini cameras/image sensor for obstacle avoidance.
Is there a supplier of Pixart chips?

Maybe, but what about booting it? It may take a minute before you can even use the mouse.

2-3 seconds on Ultibo, less interference from Linux OS :D

Hmm use a Zero as a Mouse, another Zero as Keyboard?
Or try a Microbit? Arduino?

Recently saw a 3D printed skeleton mouse, very light weight.
It could also be made with polymorph.

Ultimate gamers will make their own gear or modify existing gear.
How some before 3D scanners and 3D printers are making custom gear.
Was looking for a new keyboard for the wife, not much choice these days.
Wandered through about 6+ shops at the local shopping center, none fitted my new standards.
Only gamers are prepared to pay the high prices and even then I regarded the off the shelf offerings as comprises.

Is there a missed market in custom gear?
Customer comes in, gets scanned and hours later has the perfect for them setup.
Even just laser, water jet cutting of the keyboard plate would be a great service for DIYer.
Bins of switches for customer who can pick different switches for different key spots.

Got $5.80 optical mouse last week, a $5 bag of marbles yesterday, DIY track ball is on its way.
Spotted optical mouse $3, gut it and make custom grip?
Don't have a home 3D printer yet so looking for my polymorph ;)
