Boot to Plex but still run background apps?

Sat Feb 02, 2019 2:09 am

Tl;dr : Does anyone know if I can set up my Pi to boot into Plex (or maybe Kodi) media center but still have another app running in the background?

Full version: I currently have a large windows PC in my media room. I use it infrequently but it's always on because it's running a small extension that checks my dynamic IP and updates it with my Static IP host. In an effort to reduce power consumption, noise, heat, cable runs, etc. I would like to relagate this simple task to a Pi 2B+ I have laying around. I know the Pi can do it and the software is very low processor draw. Now, I would also like to put Plex or Kodi on it and use it as a media player, which I sometimes use the PC for as well. I know I can just just have the Pi boot to Raspbian and launch the media center manually but for the sake of ease for my family can I set it up to auto boot to the media center but still run my IP extension in the background? Or does booting to Plex/etc. mean that's all the Pi is dedicated to? Thanks!

Yes that should be well within your pi's capacity, systemd https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... systemd.md
is one method of starting things with the pi, another is rc.local https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... c-local.md
or you could schedule a task to run every so often with cron https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... ge/cron.md

As long as you dont run too many resource hungry processes concurrently you shouldnt notice any performance problems, I host a number of servers and services on a Pi-0-W but as the sole client of everything i dont tax the system so get away with using the lower performance pi.

The only 2 functions that this unit would be serving is the IP reporting and Plex, so it sounds like I should be set. Thanks for the links. I will check those out. I thought about just running a Pi 0 for the static IP but if I can multi-task it on the B+ I get the other aforementioned added benefits of leaving the PC off.
