USB power supply with 3+ ports, 1A+ each?

Sun Aug 05, 2012 12:18 am

I found this 4 Port Charger

http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-4-Port ... B001G5Z8Q4

But it only offers 20W. Are there any power supply with more than 2 ports out there that offer 1A+ on each port?

only 20W, what do you mean by only?
The PI itself can only use about 3.75W max, (when also powering keyboard and mouse), so what do you want to use 16 watt of power for the two ports of your hub left (assuming you do the conventional thing and power the PI from the HUB).

Output: 1-4 x USB, 5 VDC, 2.0A Max

I think its more 500ma per port

Don't waste your money on that thing, I buy on ebay a 7 ports 2Amp USB hub for 6$ including the shipping. It will only do 500 ma per port but for the price...

I should receive the hub next week, i will able to comment more on that when I will try this hud

YES - beware - it may also be identified on the case as "7-Hub" or similar. When I disassembled the hub, I saw why it didn't work - bridged tracks and solder "sputter" all over the board. On disassembling the power adaptor, I was absolutely horrified to see that there was no insulation covering the power pins inside the device as there should be. Again ,soldering was dire. I immediately back-claimed on the (Amazon-listed) supplier and he has been removed from Amazon. A little detective work, and I traced the supplier to Birmingham, UK, despite their use of PO boxes. Trading standards have visited the premises and taken away a considerable amount of counterfeit and dangerous goods.

Too cheap to be true - you bet! As a qualified electrical and electronics engineer, I can unequivocally say that these devices are dangerous to life.

Considering the Pi only needs what 3.5 Watts (5V * 0.75A) to operate at full load and probably less than that under normal circumstances.

Unless you're planning on powering like 4 Pi's at once... Most cell phone chargers will work (most are around 750mA-2A).

Hell my powered hub (DUB-H7) only needs 15 Watts of power (5V * 3A). If I were to power the Pi with it I would need one of those USB Y-cables so it could pull the ~1A or so from the two ports. I could probably run 3 Pi's from it with y-cables but then I'd have no USB ports with full power to work with :)

I've had the same issue with the hub I bought as well. Looks like those 7 port ones too, but it's crap.
Rattus seems to have found a decent one on Amazon though. Looks the same as the bodgy ones though.
