Apache Fails to Start

Wed Aug 01, 2012 6:14 am

Hey Everyone,
I am really really green and I've been following the instructions posted and youtube videos outlining getting apache up and running however I cannot get it up and running. Whenever i try to start with

sudo services apache2 start

i get:

Starting web server: apache2Illegal instruction
Action 'start' failed.
The Apache error log may have more information.
failed!

I've checked the logs at /var/logs/apache2 and they are both empty. Does anyone have any clue whats wrong? I've also checked netstat -apn and nothing seems to be using port 80 as was suggested on other forums.

Which distribution are you using?

On Debian Wheezy all you need to do to install Apache is

sudo apt-get install apache2

All I can suggest is trying

sudo apt-get purge apache2

followed by

sudo apt-get install apache2

Sounds like you used the wrong sources and installed a ARMv7 version of apache rather than the Raspbian version - assuming that you're using Raspbian.

What's in your /etc/apt/sources.list ?

Is it possible that i installed the debian version, so it wont start in the Raspberry pi?

This error occurred overnight (actually around 3AM last night) on my pi. I can't see any reason, nothing in error log except 'segmentation fault'. Perhaps the binary was somehow corruped. Anyway, I solved it by purging ALL apache2 packages - just purging apache2 did not suffice. So this worked: sudo apt-get purge apache2* followed by sudo apt-get install apache2

Also had to reinstall php apache module: sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5 to get php to work again.

Hope this helps someone.

Do you really think it is likely to be the same problem as people were having three years ago ?
