Print Server?

Tue Apr 17, 2018 12:05 am

Hello dears!
Is it feasible to implement a printer server with Raspbrry Pi3? let's say for 20 printers? or I would not support it?
Thank you very much for your comments! :D :D

What would such a print server do? Will it keep accounts of who printed how much? Will it serve as a firewall between a segmented network for network printers and the rest of your local area network? Will it provide network access to USB printers? Does it need to route printing requests from an encrypted VPN? Will you be sharing printers through Samba, CUPS or lpd?

It's certainly possible. Whether or not it could handle traffic for 20 printers...no idea, but I would expect so. What are you doing that requires having 20 printers? Most people make do with one or two.

Thinking of a small business that does not want to spend on a server and does not consider it cost effective to use a PC for a printer server ha ha

It is also interesting to test the processing capacity of Raspberry Pi3 . :D

Assuming from 1 to 7 employees per printer, this company has 20 to 140 employees. The Pi is a great computer, but I would not want to be responsible for a failure in which a $35 device designed to teach children programming makes it impossible for anyone to print.

Am I missing something? If there is no for need for accounting, firewall, VPN, encryption or internal network segmentation, why can't you just buy network printers and forget about a printer server? That, at least, avoids a single point of failure that takes out printing for the whole company.

If it were my company I would save money on office furniture and buy a server that uses ECC memory.

I am not getting the purpose of having a server for this project. If you simply use Wifi printers, your ~150 employees can print to any of them directly. Just hit Ctrl P, select the printer he/she want to use and click print. I am not seeing the point.
