Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ - Freeze during installation?

Thu Mar 15, 2018 11:44 am

I have a fresh installation of the latest version of Raspbian (https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/noobs/). I have prepared two different SD cards:

My 3B+ hangs during installation (complete freeze) happens on both SD cards. I can installed using my 3B without a hitch and then use that SD with my new 3B+. But something is wrong since when installing my compiled version of gcc 7.3.0 the 3B+ freeze in the sameway as it did during installation (sudo make install-strip) which prompts me to believe that I have HW problems related to heavy disc access.

My 3B using exactly the same SD card(s) works as expected.

Any clues?

Thanks,

Patrik

Refresh your SDCard with latest bootcode/firmware. The one you've got is too old to boot a 3B+.

The installation boots just fine on the B+. I then select Install and see all of the nice installations screens but after a while the B+ freezes. If I do the same thing on my B the installation completes and I can them boot up my B+ and work for a while but for example if I install something using apt (e.g. libsdl2-dev) the installation starts but during the installation the B+ freeze. The same process works fine on the B.

I have done apt update / upgrade.

Have you tried to install Raspbian directly from the latest Raspbian image without using NOOBS ?

Hi Peter,

The SD Cards has been freshly installed from the image found here https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/noobs/ (version 2.7.0) which I assume is NO. Is there any difference installing the Raspian image through Noobs or directly?

Thanks,

Patrik

NOOBS is just another layer where things can go wrong. You´ll get better support without it.

Thanks. I will try installing the Raspian directly without going through NOOBS.

NOOBS 2.6 or NOOBS Lite 2.6 WILL work with a 3B+, anything earlier won't have the bootcode and kernel in the NOOBS installer to work.

You could take an old NOOBS card and merge the new stuff from NOOBS Lite 2.6 with it, but that will be a monster load of faff for zero gain.

About 2 hours after the 3 B+ was announced. 2.6 inadvertently shipped with the wrong firmware.

Wow, I must have been too quick off the mark on Wednesday to catch a copy of 2.6 and 2.6 Lite.

I have now installed the Raspian 4.9 image directly to and SD card and during compilation of GCC 7.3.0 my 3B+ freezes exactly as before and my 3B works as a charm. My conclusion is that the 3B+ hardware is defect. Anyone has any other idea?

Thanks,

Patrik

What's running on your RPi? Have you got into SDCard swapping hell (also known as walking through treacle) by over committing RAM? How big is the stuff you're compiling?

The card only contains the image and gcc 7.3.0. When I compile gcc 7.3.0 on my 3B+ it freezes when I use exactly the same SD card and compile gcc 7.3.0 it works. When I tried to install something on the 3B+ it freezes when I install exactly the same package using apt on the 3B it works.

I was running htop in another windows, so when the 3B+ freezes there is no swapping at all (the max committed memory is 137 MB). No temperature warning (61 degrees), cpu utilisation is 50%.

Think you've made a typo. I assume you're saying when you use the identical card to compile gcc on the 3B it works?

(For what it's worth, I agree. I've got an alternative new PSU and card coming but my intuition currently is nudging me towards a hardware issue, but we'll see.)

Did you keep an eye on dmesg for any fs issues or other concerns before the freeze? How long after the freeze did you wait?

Given the low CPU utilisation but high IO, could you do me a huge favour and, on an otherwise cool and unloaded system, do-

Code: Select all

sudo dd if=/dev/mmcblk0 bs=4M status=progress >/dev/null
And then in another window run dmesg every few minutes to try to catch any timeout or read errors?

(Sorry for patronising you, I know I could've just said run a full memory card read but I might as well be specific, especially if someone else wants to join us who's not as knowledgeable as you or I.)

You've probably already said this somewhere but, what memory card and PSU are you using? Are you able to monitor the 5V supply across GPIO pins 2 and 6 if it's not the 2.5A official one?

Does your power supply give a steady 5.1V @ 2.5A? I've had my RPi3B+ freeze when the power supply was inadequate.

Do you see "[198449.466598] Under-voltage detected! (0x00050000)" in your dmesg log (/var/log/kern.log)?

I have the official Raspberry PSU.

I am using an SanDisk ULTRA® microSDHC 32GB UHS-I (Class 10) 98MB/s + Adapter

There is no trace of "under-voltage" detected in the dmesg log.

I am actually using the same SD Card on both my 3B and 3B+. I just rm the build directory and re run my compilation test.

I will check for timeouts and/or read errors tomorrow.

Thanks. Is that the newer 2.5A official PSU or the older official 2A PSU? (I discovered I was still on the 2A, although I too haven't see any under voltage warnings in dmesg plus actual measured voltage was good even though I'm seeing card timeout messages etc in dmesg.)

I'm sure working together we'll all collectively suss out what's going on and solve it.

Urgh! That doesn't bode well for me then either, with the 2.5A and a Sandisk Ultra Class 10 16Gb on order in the hope that doing so will fix my issues. :(

Many thanks for the info, Patrik.

I am also having problems with 3B+ freezing when fitted with a SD card from a previous 3B

Does anybody know what the software/kernel differences are? i.e. what new or different files are in the boot directory or similar etc.

New card (Sandisk Ultra Class 10 16Gb) new PSU (official 5.1V 2.5A PSU - logging 5.08V minimum under load) and latest Stretch image and it's still breaking just doing full memory card reads here-

Re: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ - Freeze during installation?

Mon Mar 19, 2018 3:34 pm

Hi there, I have an issue with my new 3B+ freezing after the installation during regular operation.

Just received my 3B+ on Friday and installed everything on Saturday. Unfortunately it crashed several times already without installing more software than Raspbian OS (using NOOBS and also directly via Raspbian image) showing memory errors on the console. Power supply is original Raspberry 2.5A one, changed SD card to another one for testing. No change in stability as it crashed again. The Pi is only connected via GB Ethernet. HDMI and USB keyboard are unplugged.

The only configuration so far was done by raspi-config to activate SSH daemon and setting up LAN, reducing GPU memory to 16MB and changing localisation. And I did an update of the packages with apt-get.

Any idea if it is related to the current software version? Otherwise the Pi will go back for replacement. See photo attached for more details of one of the error messages on the console.
