Unpleasant new board smell ?

Thu May 25, 2017 1:41 am

Just opened my new Pi 3 and it really smells bad right out of the box. Reminiscent of old toxic electronic boards. Is this odor going to go away?

What smell? I don't ever recall any of my boards smelling bad. Perhaps a tiny chemical smell. But you'll live.
Could be the epoxy. But I believe there's no lead.
Unless there's something wrong with yours. Maybe yours got contaminated.

I'm hoping that a knowledgeable person, perhaps from manufacturing will respond.

It's a shame we cannot exchange smell experiences over the net.

But really, what smell?

I have never noticed any Pi smell. Of the purchasers of more than 10 million Pi you are the first to complain of a smell.

The Pi certainly does not smell like the "old toxic electronic boards" of the 1960's, 70's and 80's.

This is curious.

Hardly the first

Check that your Pi works properly when powered up (just in case yours is actually broken), then leave it out of the enclosure for a few hours, the smell should dissipate.

Probably just some residue from the flux cleaning processes. Check that it works, if it doesn't send it back. The smell will probably go away.

Also, where was your Pi made - should be in the silkscreening on the board.

Personally I like that "just opened" smell of a new Pi.

Much better than the burnt circuit board smell of something that's gone badly wrong!

Reminds me of the, for the older members, smell of a badly burnt CB mobile in the 80s!

That's citizen band not chromebook.

The only smell I have ever noticed on a new RPi is that of flux, and that is not a very strong smell (unless you are one [of those that are becoming more common] that keeps themselves from experiencing any form of smell, then you may be more sensitive than the rest of us).

The new Pi smell is perfectly normal and not anywhere toxic in the amount of exposure that can be contained in the anti-static bag.

When I smell a new one it immediately takes me back my days working in electronics, in production facilities that smell pervades everything.

We don't usually notice these smells on new equipment because most stuff is encased, though there is a distinct smell to ABS plastic casing and the packaging we get when getting something new out of the box. If you get your nose up against the ventilation slots ion most new encased electronics, it's likely to smell similar to your exposed Pi.

Made in Wales. It probably smells of leeks.

:)

But really, it's a new circuit board. It no doubt smells like new circuit board. Wonderful.

Hi myisland,

I just got a pi a few days ago. The headache-inducing chemical stench, presumably from VOCs, was terrible. I'm letting mine air out to see if it gets better. Unfortunately I don't have a place to power it up to try and cook off some of these fumes outside of my living space.

I've had this with new electronics but I've never had something quite this small produce such an intensity of fumes. I'm hoping it dissipates soon so I can use it. I'm disappointed at this extra step in using my new toy.

In my experience most people don't connect respiratory and other symptoms to VOC exposure from outgassing fumes (from new electronics or other sources like paint or solvents). If one as asthma or other conditions to make the problem more obvious it's easier to connect the dots.

I notice your post is from several weeks ago. Has yours outgassed to the point where it's less irritating?

Best,
SK

Can i suggest than the mods chance the title to "unpleasant from" "toxic" as I don't think anyone has died or has been in-firmed due to any possible emissions?

[edit]Thanks :)[/edit]

I think that back in my day, which was decades ago, that familiar smell was rosin (colophony) which is made from the sap of pine trees. I believe that ill effects require a long exposure to abundant fumes.

"The headache-inducing chemical stench",

You guys must be very sensitive. I have bought a bunch of Pi recently. Hardly notice any smell other than the slight aroma of new electronics. Certainly nothing headache inducing.

The ones made in Wales do have a hint of leek. The ones I bought in the USA recently were made in China and have a tinge of Jasmine.

I live with an asthmatic that has a terrible response to a whiff of some perfumes and deodorants and garlic from a mile away. She has never complained about all the electronics I collect in the house or the rosin fumes from soldering.

I left it in the garage to air out. Just checked it and it still smells really toxic. It burns the sinus so that's more than just unpleasant. Did the Raspberry-pi police change my topic title? They were almost giving these boards away so maybe there was a bad batch.

It's not "toxic" because you're not dead, yet. It's obnoxious, unpleasant, nauseating, etc. NOT TOXIC.

Did the Raspberry-pi police change my topic title?
I asked for it to be changed because no-one has died or even been slightly harmed (so far)

Even myself, quite known for biting at the hand that feeds us, thought it was a bit much :)

Sure someone changed the posts title. Quite rightly too.

The Pi may be toxic if taken to excess but it is no more toxic, and probably a lot less so, than many other electronics gadgets you have in your life.

I'd like to know more about your statement "They were almost giving these boards away so maybe there was a bad batch."

Who is "they"?

There is something weird going on here and knowing that might help.

I say we change it to "pleasant new board smell ?" because I sort of like it.

I agree.

Pi smell like nice new electronics. With a hint of leeks or jasmine depending on where they were made. It's funny what tricks your mind can play on you.

Sadly we cannot post smells to the forum but if the OP would like to send me his Pi so that I can have a sniff that would be great. I will gladly reimburse the cost of the Pi and postage. Or pass it on to another forum member for a sniff.
