Installing ffmpeg - using a static build?

Sat Mar 04, 2017 11:30 am

Hi,

I'd like to install ffmpeg on my Pi 3. I've take a look at a guide here https://owenashurst.com/?p=242 (and some other similar ones) and it looks really hard. It seems like it would take a lot of time to compile, and I would be likely to run in to problems. Also it looks like I would need to compile and install additional libraries for handling media as well. It looks like it might be important to do this before installing ffmpeg for it to work properly? I'm a complete beginner with no idea.

I also looked at cross compiling https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Compilatio ... aspberryPi, and this looks even more terrifying.

Then I found these static builds https://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/, with all the commonly needed libraries included. This to me looks like a far easier solution, and I just wanted to know:
  • Will it work to download one of these builds?
  • Are there any disadvantages to doing it this way? (some compiler option that would make it work better on the pi or something?)
  • Which one would be better on the pi, the armhf build or the armel build?
  • Is just compiling it myself way easier than I think and I'm just making a big fuss over nothing?
Thanks so much for any light you can shed on this!

If you are running Raspbian Jessie you can use Libav, see:

I don't think your computer will explode if it didn't work - give it a go - nothing to lose :)
PS Lets us know if it works :)

Well the computer didn't explode, and it worked, for anyone that finds this later.

I downloaded the "armhf" version (hf stands for Hardware Float(ing point) I think).

https://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/releas ... tic.tar.xz

I extracted it in to some random directory in home. Since I don't know the steps to "properly" install a program downloaded without apt-get, I just navigate to the folder it is in, and just run it from there.

It seems to be reasonably quick. I am using it to convert downloaded youtube videos to mp3, and it probably only takes about 4-5 times longer per file than my i5 desktop.
