It's not just Raspberry Pi 3, I have a Raspberry Pi Mobel B. The USB dongle that was working with it stops working after installing the new Raspbian distro. The one with the PIXEL desktop. The kernel module is said to be loaded. I have no clue what's going on.

Ok - so you can also give the output of dmesg as advised above?

I managed to connect to the WiFi. The GUI interface on PIXEL doesn't seem to pick up the networks but the USB WiFi dongle was functional.

To get the network to connect I had to manually edit /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf and add my network to it. Then after rebooting everything connected. The GUI doesn't do it like it used to before PIXEL.

Same thing here. I'm using a Pi 1 Model B+ and installed Raspbian via NOOBS. On the console, "ifconfig -a" shows the wlan0 interface is present and in the dmesg log I can see that the wifi device (realtek based usb-stick) is properly detected and the firmware is loaded without errors.

I guess it wouldn't be much of a problem for me doing the manual configuration in /etc/network/interfaces, but I plan to give this device to my 12-year-old cousin who's just not a Linux crack at all (he's more into Minecraft, you see).

However, one last thing I will try tonight is to disable wifi power management (@Squash: thanks for the hint).

EDIT: configuring wifi through /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf does do the trick. So technically, wifi is working but the GUI tools of the current Raspbian / Raspbian via NOOBS images seem to be unable to detect the wlan0 interface (at least in some cases).

@ jjsanderson

I have also experienced issues w/ the pi 3 not recognizing any wlan interfaces. when I scan for networks I can see all of the networks so Im pretty certain that the hardware is working correctly. I just don't know how to configure the wlan correctly after trying many things from various user posts. In your post, you seemed to be having similar issues. Have you resolved your issues or are you still having problems. If you have any suggestions, advice or resources that you could point me, much appreciated.
Thank You

Hi Adam,
I have had this problem in the last 48 hours too. It took 36 hours to solve and I made this post regarding the solution in my case. viewtopic.php?f=91&t=170245

I have WIFI working well for months now with these files in place:

/etc/network/interfaces

Code: Select all

# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)

# Please note that this file is written to be used with dhcpcd
# For static IP, consult /etc/dhcpcd.conf and 'man dhcpcd.conf'

# Include files from /etc/network/interfaces.d:
source-directory /etc/network/interfaces.d

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet manual

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
    wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

allow-hotplug wlan1
iface wlan1 inet manual
    wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
country=FI

network={
        ssid="zipit"
        psk="secretstuffhere"
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}

network={
        ssid="nomansland"
        psk="secretstuffhere"
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}

network={
        ssid="AndroidAP"
        psk="secretstuffhere"
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}
With this I can move from home to office and have the Pi connect to the WIFI there. Or plug in ethernet and use that.

I have no idea what Pixel does. I have KDE installed here but my Pi run headless most of the time.

Thanks G7icd, this worked a treat, after hours of thrashing about
Question: was wlan0 in the second block of instructions a mistype for wlan1?
Would there by any issue in not using dhcp and setting a static address with your system?
I'll try it anyway

Try it:
echo "anybadstring" > /etc/modprobe.d/brcmfmac.conf
reboot

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/brcmfmac.conf would be easier.

Just wanted to say that I was having the exact same issue, and the solution posted by @g7icd worked for me. I made the suggested edits to `etc/dhcpcd.conf` and `/etc/network/interfaces` (following them verbatim, no 'extra' tweaks or anything like that), and then rebooted. When my Pi came back up, my wireless AP/router had assigned it an IP address and I was able to access the Internet.

One oddity, though: when I click the WiFi icon in the panel, it still says No wireless interfaces found. It hardly matters for my purposes, so long as WiFi actually works. Just figured I should mention: I would have solved this problem sooner if I hadn't been using that status icon as my primary indication of whether WiFi was 'working'. Don't be fooled like I was, it's possible for WiFi to be functional even when you're getting the No network interfaces found message in the UI. (YMMV and all that, just passing along my experience...)

I tried all the solutions proposed to solve the problem of lack of wifi in raspberry pi 3.

Sudo nano / etc / network / interfaces
Sudo nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

The iw commands and nothing worked until you upgrade firmware

The command
Sudo rpi-update did not do anything.

I found this previous instruction:

Sudo aptitude show raspberry-bootloader
To apply
Sudo rpi-update and now if the wifi card is configured.

Firmware 4.4.50 v7 +

Happened to 4..9.16 v7 +

Everything worked well with the raspberries until I update raspbian from March 2nd.

Now everything is ok.

I have the same general problem. Additionally, if I run "iwlist wlan0 scan", I get all of the expected WiFi networks in the area, but still none register in the GUI.

Thoughts?

Hello, can be the "No wireless interface found" problem caused by absence of this capacitor? I've lost it somehow.. :cry:
Thank you!

I have the same problem and I tried all fixes in this thread. Nothing and really nothing helps.
I have a second raspi3 with working wlan! I switched the sd cards and I have exact the same problem with this raspi 3. The other one has wlan with both sd cards.
The same with bluetooth.
So its a hardware problem!
But the firmware upgrade didn't fix it for me. So I think on one raspi my wlan and bluetooth chip is broken!

In Raspberry Pi configuration, under the Localisation tab set the wifi Country to your Country. I picked US and my Wifi started to work. Maybe this could work for you.

I think I've read all the threads on this, but the majority of messages are about failure to find or join a network. This is a failure to find the interface, and while it doesn't seem to be widespread generally, it's completely endemic for us.
^^^ this.

This happened to me after installing and enabling ufw. sudo ufw disable fixed it.

Does anyone know this issue and a fix to it to have both ufw and WLAN?

Thanks!
