I have sniffed on the port with wireshark and couldn't see any packets as well.

That doesn't look good for one of my most wanted features ):
AFAIK another method is to use uboot !

Yes, but that requires SD cards again, which I don't want to have because those are unreliable in a datacenter environment.

Using a system that boots from intramfs root *, and dose not write** to the sd card you should not have any problem with filesystem crouption ect.

* just like how a router works !! you can pull the plug it is no problem !
see also openwrt , tinycorelinux ..ect

** or at least is no writeing to the fs when the power is cut.

in Datacenter use we also had Problems with SD cards just dying, that's just a factor we don't really want to have.

I suspect any "update" will be a blog post announcing the release of the feature, a new release of the Raspbian packages, and a tutorial on how upgrade to get the feature and use it.

Until that happens, there will be silence from the RPF.

(And, yes, I'm looking forward to it as well. I'd like to try out the technique on the yet-to-be-released CM3 and the WD SATA adapter.)

Yes, this feature is so much needed, i use the RPI as a commercial controller for my application and install it in client homes. I have to change SD cards because of corruption every 4-5 months, it is driving me crazy because my products seem unrealiable :(.

I don't know if Gordon is still after beta testers, but the docs pages are being updated regularly based on the ongoing work.
If you're that desperate for it, then there is the option to get involved in the development (see the first paragraph of the main docs page).

Thanks for the above link it helped a lot. I have successfully managed too boot from usb. For the configuration u will need the SD card the first time, but after that, the usb boot is autonomous and u dont need sd card anymore. For anyone that would like to try here is the link: https://github.com/raspberrypi/document ... des/msd.md . It seems that everything is working fine except the built-in wireless. It seems like the OS cannot find it and i get a message no wirelles interfaces found. When i boot from the SD card the wireless is present and functional. Any thoughts?

I used the link above to enable USB Boot on my PI 3, and my Wireless came right back online when booting from the USB. I'd start over, and re-try everything. Something else must have gone wrong on your end.

I have repeated the procedure 5 times in a row and every time it is the same result. The wireless is present when booting from the sd card, and there are no wireless interfaces found when booting from usb  .
