Extending internal flash storage using SD card

Hello all,

I am using the compute module 3 with the IO board. Is it possible to extend the internal memory using an SD card while still booting from the internal flash. Many android OS devices allow for this functionality and I was wondering if it was possible using the CM3. The goal is to ultimately build/use opencv and a lot of python libraries, which probably could not be maintained in internal flash alone.

eMMC and SDcard socket (the one on the CMIO) share the same I/O pins (refer to Compute Module schematic for details), so that's not possible.

What you can do is add a SD card to SD1 interface (search the forum as this is not an uncommon question), which is available from GPIO pins 22-27.

Two other options...NEC markets a version of the CM3 with 16GB of eMMC flash. The RPF markets the CM3L that permits you to have however much eMMC you want on the carrier board, or to have a SD slot on the carrier.
