Reliable external storage for CM3

Mon Jan 08, 2018 10:43 am

Hi,

we are looking for an option to add a reliable external data storage to our CM3 carrier board (no SD card). Booting and OS should run from the integrated eMMC as usual.

One idea would be to integrate a USB to SATA bridge on the board and attach a small SSD (e.g.32GB) to it. Does that sound reasonable ? Are there other (better) options ?

Thanks, Ondrej

One option would be to use a CM3L instead of a CM3 and put either eMMC flash (as much as you want) on the carrier board or--as you say--a USB to SATA and an SSD. Either way, you would then boot from the carrier board. Depending on how much mass storage space you need, another option would be the NEC 16GB CM3 module.

We would rather keep the additional data storage optional, as it is not needed for all applications and adds some relevant cost to the board. So it should be a separate chip which can be mounted or not, as needed.

For the USB to SATA option I found the PL-2571 Hi-Speed USB to SATAII bridge controller from Prolific, which seems suitable for the CM3.

By the way, is the NEC 16GB CM3 module publicly available? I can't really find any source for purchasing it.
