rpiboot question

Ahoy all,
I've noticed some strange behaviour which I wanted to clarify - a "naked" uninitialised pi compute module seems to accept the J4 / "sudo rpiboot" procedure just fine, but it seems that when I try the same on a board that already has something bootable on it that J4/rpiboot doesn't work. Is this expected behaviour?
I've noticed that if I boot the module up and then wipe the partition table out that J4/rpiboot starts to work again (just deleting the partitions with fdisk). Suppose (I mean just *imagine*...) that you accidentally stuck something dodgy on the device that meant you were unable to then use fdisk or anything else - is there a known recovery procedure to get it working again?
