RPi4B 4GB outperforming CM4 8GB w/ NVMe?

Thu Jun 24, 2021 7:26 pm

Long story short; RPi4B 4GB outperforming CM4 8GB w/ NVMe? Is it just me? or?
I have an RPi4B 4GB setup using Ubuntu server. it's used to build kernels and RPi image(s).
I built an image, kernel and started the RPi4B 4GB xz compression the same time as my CM4 8GB and the RPi4B 4GB finished 15 minutes before the CM4 8GB.

RPi4B 4GB is clocked at 1900, the /boot/config.txt:

Code: Select all

arm_64bit=1
kernel=kernel8.img
initramfs initrd.gz
disable_overscan=1
gpu_mem=64
arm_freq=1900
over_voltage=4
force_turbo=1
dtparam=sd_poll_once
dtparam=audio=on
enable_uart=0
dtoverlay=disable-wifi
dtoverlay=disable-bt
disable_splash=0
avoid_warnings=1
#dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d,cma-256
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
max_framebuffers=2
And the CM4 8GB is clocked at 2200, the /boot/config.txt:

Code: Select all

arm_freq=2200
force_turbo=1
gpu_freq=750
over_voltage=8
arm_freq_min=600
core_freq_min=500
core_freq=500
initial_turbo=60
ALL 4 cores of both were hammered at 100% CPU usage. temps on the 4B were 65c and temps on the CM4 were 75c.
The 4B has a fanshim whilst the CM4 is cooled by a PC case fan sitting on top of the bottom bit of the waveshare case (no holes for NVMe/PCI-e)

Am I missing something?

I wouldn't rely on those frequencies being used - it's worth checking using "vcgencmd measure_freq arm". And why are you using different configurations? Why not start with the same on both and establish a baseline.

CM4:

Code: Select all

arm_64bit=1
kernel=kernel8.img
initramfs initrd.gz
disable_overscan=1
gpu_mem=256
arm_freq=2200
over_voltage=8
force_turbo=1
gpu_freq=750
#dtparam=sd_poll_once
dtparam=audio=on
enable_uart=0
#dtoverlay=disable-wifi
#dtoverlay=disable-bt
disable_splash=0
avoid_warnings=1
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
#dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
max_framebuffers=2
# USB-CM4
dtoverlay=dwc2,dr_mode=host
# SAFE-MODE
#gpio=5=ip,pu
#[gpio5=0]
#[gpio5=1]
#arm_freq=2250
#gpu_freq=750
#over_voltage=12
#force_turbo=1
RPi4B:

Code: Select all

arm_64bit=1
kernel=kernel8.img
initramfs initrd.gz
disable_overscan=1
gpu_mem=64
arm_freq=1900
over_voltage=4
force_turbo=1
dtparam=sd_poll_once
dtparam=audio=on
enable_uart=0
dtoverlay=disable-wifi
dtoverlay=disable-bt
disable_splash=0
avoid_warnings=1
#dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d,cma-256
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
max_framebuffers=2
Brb reboot.

EH!! whole system feels more responsive! What was causing it?
