For those who may be wondering, Mathematica works on a 256MB Model B, although sluggishly. I don't have a 512MB one to compare it to yet though,

Hi there, since using the X desktop doesn't use the GPU you could try changing the memory split in raspi-config.
Reduce the GPU memory to say 16 or 32 and see if that helps. That leaves more memory for Linux itself and Linux tasks to use.

Would you mind testing wether W|A queries work? Just enter '==' (without quotes) and state your problem.

On my system, Wolfram tries to fire up Java for a minute or two, then stops with some error messages. I think this is due to too little memory.

Edit: Just noticed it needs to connect to the internet for certain tasks. Wasn't aware of this . Still, have to figure out what's wrong with my Java setup. No problem compiling and running applications from terminal or Geany.

Java starts up successfully with a GPU memory of 16MB, but is on the edge. I had one crash using Mathematica, and it was the first one in this Pi's life!

Fortunately a 512MB model is on its way to the german everglades .

Hi Jim. It's called the Emsland, basically a marsh. Somehow I stuck here . Oldenburg is the next civilized city, about 40 km away from me.

And we're still waiting for the global climate change, but with December and January more or less w/o temperatures below 273.15 K at sea level, there's a chance.

For what it's worth, I performed some benchmarking of Mathematica on the RPi and posted the results here. I observed considerable improvements with overclocking; however, there were negligible gains on my benchmarking functions with changing the memory split.
