The following happens to me with a clean install of NOOBs or Jessie, and also after upgrading to the latest 4.4 Kernel.
To see it, let`s open Mathematica and draw a ball:

SphericalPlot3D[1, {\[Theta], 0, Pi}, {\[Phi], 0, 2 Pi}]

Do you see the axes labeling with numbers? Or just pixel-blobs? If you see the correct labeling, do you still see it after rotating the plot with the mouse?
