Accessing the radio spectrum

There are many ways to process the audio spectrum using a microphone or the visual spectrum using a camera. USB hardware and software for both of these are readily available. But when it comes to accessing the radio spectrum, things are more difficult. Especially for people with little knowledge of radio technology. You can buy an 8-bit RTL SDR dongle for $20 and get started, but the frequencies covered are limited and they are prone to overloading and phantom images unless additional filter hardware is added. The 14-bit SDRplay RSP1A has emerged as a good $100 all-rounder since it covers 1kHz to 2GHz with higher performance and multiple built in filters. To make it work straight out of the box, there is a downloadable SD card image for the Raspberry Pi3 - this YouTube video shows how easy it is to get up and running for the beginner:
