If you are looking for a simple kit to help develop Python skills - or just for a bit of fun checkout my PiMuxClock kit on Kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/42 ... pimuxclock.
The PiMuxClock, is a simple add-on card, allowing you to create a basic digital clock display for your RPi. There are no difficult to solder parts and in it's basic form needs only simple GPIO commands to operate. If you are looking for a bit more of a challenge there is an enhanced option that includes a DS18B20 temperature sensor and connection for the Adafruit 1307 I2C RTC board. The board will ship with example programmes in Python but if you are into 'C' the PiMuxClock would also be an excellent vehicle to try out / develop your skills.
There are lots of pledge levels from £5, with a range of rewards running from a bare PCB to a fully build class room pack with lesson plans.
Any residual Kickstarter funds left over from the development will be donated to the RaspberryPi Foundation.
The final prototype PCB is on order and is slightly smaller than the first prototype pictured above.
