Raspberry and 4k

Tue Jan 13, 2015 12:02 am

So im looking for information on the Pi's ability to output 4K. However, I'm not looking to do video playback or anything like that. They are purely displaying web pages that refresh every 5 minutes. I am looking into 4K in an attempt to get more information on screen.

I'm using RPi Model B (Not B+), but if a B+ would handle it better, then that is an option. And for an OS, Im using Raspbian

I have seen statements that the Pi can do 4K. It's a good thing you're not planning to do video, though, as--apparently--it does it rather slowly.

There won't be any difference between a B and a B+. The differences are number of USB ports and power regulation. The processors, memory size, and default clock frequency are the same.

To achieve 4k @ 60Hz, you require HDMI 2.

HDMI 1 (or 1.4) which is in 99.99% of today's electronics can do 4k, but only at very low refresh rates. E.g 15hz, or 30hz And this is with chroma down sampling. This is due to bandwidth limitation of HDMI 1 chipset.

But, if you are not worried about refresh rate... you should be fine.

There is a thread on the forum about people who have got 4k working are fairly decent rates. Do a search.

Note that HW video playback is limited to a little over 1080p30, and cannot do 4K.
