Suitable Micro USB to USB Cable on Amazon

Mon Jan 05, 2015 1:38 pm

Can anyone recommend an exact one which works efficientl0y, off Amazon?

I have 6 at home and only the one which came with my PS4 controller works correctly. All the other 5 give me rainbow squares at the top right of the screen.

It's definitely not the USB plug which is an iPad 5v, 2a charger, as like I say, the PS4 cable is fine.

Why are you assuming it's the cable and not the cruddy iPad charger?

Because I have tested all 6 cables I have doing the same thing, one after the other and 1 wire was absolutely fine.

The iPad (think its iPad and not iPhone - I have both so not sure) is 5v, 2a and I have Googled its suitability and it seems ok, so it would be weird it if weren't ok, if 1 wire was good?

iPad chargers aren't designed to deliver more than 500mA which may not be enough for a RPi with WiFi and keyboard/mouse.

most decent 5V 2A PSU's will be fine - as long as you have a decent cable.

the RPi will happy work on less than 5V - one of mine will run all day on 3.6V [no usb things attached]

the brown out detector is good for finding issues.

if you have one cable that runs fine use that - as it shows a problem with the other ones.

I don't think anyone would be prepared to stick their head above the parapet and recommend a Micro USB cable unseen. I would make the general recommendation you go for a genuine known brand. How good Amazon are at sourcing genuine parts I wouldn't like to say. If you can find one that specifies the gauge of wire they use for the power lines, you want 20 AWG, and not too long. The shorter the better.

Had an unfortunate experience with Apple gear Dougie ?. Hideously overpriced, put if its real (Thats a biggie, there is more fake apple stuff around than anything else), I would honestly expect it to perform to what it says on the label. I doubt 500mA would actually run an iPad, led alone charge it. In any case the OP says the charger works with one of his cables, so its obviously big enough ad ugly enough to do what he wants. Its just his leads that aren't up to it. Over length, conductors made from damp thread, whatever.

It's even more of a crapshoot if you buy from one of the sellers who use Amazon for its shopfront and payment system. Those sellers frequently keep using the same item details long after they have sold out of the original stock and restocked with a slightly different version.

I've bought a bunch of USB cables for my Pis from Amazon. I get the Amazon-branded AmazonBasics cables, and the 6-foot ones work fine, as well as the three-foot ones. Can't say what gauge, but they are physically thicker than all my other USB cables. They're good quality and never caused me problems.

I dunno what they'd charge to deliver one of these : http://swag.raspberrypi.org/products/ra ... wer-supply to your neck of the woods, but it absolutely works with any Pi and it has a fixed lead made of substantial cable. It also charges my phone quicker than my real charger......
