How to launch a .exe

Mon Dec 29, 2014 10:28 pm

Hi all,

I'm 100% from a MS background and I have a simple question please  .

Basically I've downloaded MAME onto a USB and attached it to my Pi but I don't know how to run it?

Do .exe's have to be in a specific directory and how do I actually run a .exe please?

Thank you in advance :D

For all practical purposes, there is no way to run a .exe file on the Pi.

Look for a thread called "Win95 on Real Rpi" (or something like that) for the closest approximation.
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

Thanks for your reply.

This seems very alien to me haha  .

So, would I have to run it from command line before loading Raspbian GUI?

I'll have a look for that thread too, thanks.

Is the MAME version compatible with Debian ARMHF compiled for the RPi ARMv6 architecture :?:

Maybe you are trying to run Windows Software, that will not work ;)

If you wish to run old games:

If you have the most recent version of Raspbian then you can just open the Pi Store and download MAME for Pi...

.EXE executables are compiled for the x86 (intel/AMD) architecture and only run under the DOS/windows environment, so you simply cannot run them on a PI.

..and some weird people just use .exe in a misguided attempt to signify that the file is executable. I've even seen shell scripts with a .exe name

Please, can we keep on topic - last few posts will be confusing to a newcomer. If you want to make a comment, please ensure there is enough information there to explain what you are saying. This is a complex subject for a beginner - single sentences won't cut it.

I think the easiest way to get MAME working is to get a SD image and format an SD card with PiPlay (http://pimame.org/)

I have a bunch of SD cards kicking around for just that reason. I put images on them, check them out, and then reformat with a different image.

Rinse and repeat
