Offline functionality

Hi all,

I have recently been looking into RPi and I am intrigued by the whole thing. I am getting one for Christmas and I have an idea for what I can use it for.

Simple question, and I feel stupid asking - Is it possible to use offline? Most of the guides and projects I have seen all link to wifi etc.

My idea is simple, I work offshore, often no internet, I want to install emulators on it to play when I'm off shift. Once I have installed and set it up at home, go offshore just plug it in to the TV and away you go? Possible?

Not asking for help setting it up just yet ;)

Cheers in advance.

Yes, that will be fine, you don't need a network connection in general usage. You might want one when setting up.

Having an internet connection while setup is definitely important. You can then disconnect the device from the net and test again , while using
the internet on a tablet/laptop for troubleshooting.

That is a bit of an understatement: it is highly advisable to have a network connection to add and/or update software like the operating system (even if you buy a preconfigured SD card as it is often outdated) and the emulators the OP wants to run.

Once it is all working nicely you can do without a network connection.

Except for the clock drifting while it runs and the clock stopping every time it's rebooted (even with fake-hwclock installed) unless you add an external RTC.

SInce the OP stated: I want to install emulators on it to play an incorrect clock will do no harm.

Point being? You certainly don't NEED a net connection setting up, but one is certainly very useful.

In a bad mood? The point is: Is'nt that what I said?
