New project (beginner)

Mon Dec 08, 2014 4:11 pm

Hi All,

I recently bought a RPi and have been using it as media player.
But looking on the internet to different projects and thinking of what I could do I came up with the following.

When someone rings the door bell this phonetype thing rings in my living room then I answer and press a button to open the main entrance door. Is there a way to have a rpi in between so I can open the door by app/server/mail or something?

I have very little knowledge of this, I am willing to learn. Just a hobby project:)

Any help is appreciated!

Don

Robotic finger. 1 servo, 1 transistor, 1 resistor. Internet via wifi dongle.
note: I may or may not know what I'm talking about...

Nothing factually incorrect there but I fear that anyone for whom that information would be sufficient would not have needed to ask in the first place. :(

It is a sort of chicken and egg situation. You can't do "interesting" things until you have learned quite a lot but the best way to learn a lot is to do "interesting" things. :)

Thanks for the reply but drgeoff is right. As I am beginner, I need more detailed info.

As a beginner, you need to learn how to do the basics first

1. Learn to turn an LED on and off
2. Learn to read a switch connected to the Pi
3. Learn to control a servo connected to the pi
4. Learn how to control the Rpi via a web application

You can't expect to do it all in one simple step nor should you expect someone else to tell you exactly how to do it free of charge.

Read some of the tutorials in MagPi or on the Adafruit website, have a go at making something and then come back if you are struggling.

Take a look at http://raspi.tv Alex Eames has seven free GPIO samples (designed as a get started tutorial) on there

Thanks.

I'll have a start on the beginners tutorials.
I wasn't expecting to get it done for me free of charge, the whole point is for doing it myself.

I'll go on and try, if I have struggles I'll post back here:)

thanks:)
