Beginner Starting a Computer Club Need Help!

Thu Dec 04, 2014 6:24 am

Hey guys new on here i have little to no experience and have no raspi. But i was planning to start a computer/programming club where they will supply them and i need some kits to buy and also some books to study because im going to learn and show people how to operate the raspi's and be the one really putting the club together and i need some steps where to start and some cool projects to start off so the idea and the club stays afloat. Any help and any guides or steps the in the right directions are greatly appreciated. I know some basic java don't know if that's useful.(I may should have put more research into it but came here right away thought it would be best) I would most likely buy a ras soon with my own money. Thanks in advanced :D :D

Avoid VGA-only monitors. Try to get hold of ones with at least
DVI-D inputs. HDMI would be the best. Check flea markets
and FreeCycle for cheap offers.

What else you need depends on what you want and what
you are able to scrounge together , check this :

• Don't like the board ? Missing features ? Change to the prosilver theme ! You can find it in your settings.
• Don't like to search the forum BEFORE posting 'cos it's useless ? Try googling : yoursearchtermshere site:raspberrypi.org

Congratulations! Best of luck getting the club off the ground.

What ghans said...

Other sources for monitors:
Thrift shops.
Companies upgrading desktops.
Parents with old ones hanging around gathering dust.

As noted, make sure any monitors you plan to use have either a DVI-D or HDMI connector.

Thanks for the help will look in to it. But I was thinking of simple robotics like controlling remote control cars and making raspberrypi cars and such. Any projects l on that will be appreciated and any starter kits and components I would need would also be great. :D

Thank you! And I had a little question could you be able to use a hdmi to a dvi monitor right?

Are these links just for the UK? And are any of these programs for the US?

HDMI and DVI-D are compatible. You can get a simple cable that wires an HDMI output to a DVI-D input. I use them all the time since the older monitors I buy for use with Pis tend not to have an actual HDMI input.

For doing demos (e.g. Jams), I take a 1 Gal. Ziplock bag and put a Pi (Model B), mouse, HDMI-->DVI cable, power block, USB-->microUSB cable, standard computer power cable (for a monitor, and SD card in. Pull it out, add keyboard and monitor and I'm good to go. I have a separate ziplock with a powered USB, WiFI dongle, power block and all cables if I need/can use that. For a B+. make the SD card a microSD and throw in the WiFi dongle. For the A+. toss in an unpowered hub, WiFi dongle, and any additional cables.

Other general supplies are AC power cords (mains power), breaker bars (or surge protectors), a small set of speakers, multi-meter, and any spares I want to carry. (Sometimes at a Jam either someone has forgotten some critical bit of gear and needs a loaner, or one needs to figure out if their problem is something they're using, which can be done by swapping in "known good" components.) If Jim Manley sees this thread, he may add remarks about the kit I travel with.

First step is to place a advert in your local
paper, To find people with interest in the
the Raspberry Pi and computer programming
and electronics, You will get some who are
good at programming and some at electronics
If you get a good response. Try to find a meeting
place, Well you live in California the land of the
silicon chip. I would think you would find plenty of
out / lets for surplus components Cheap
Do you have a Radio Shack near you
Thy might know of people with interest
in computers and electronics.

You are starting at the right age 16 yrs
I think you will learn the software side ok
But find the hardware side a bit more
difficult, but don't let that worrie you
First on the hardware side, build a few
electronic projects on a breadboard
So on your shopping list you want is
1, Breadboard
2 A 0 /12v power supply
3, A sample of components
Resistors / LEDs/ Diodes /Transistors
A multi meter A Cheap one will do
You will need to know a little about
electronics before building Robots
Remember you design the the circuit
first, Then design the program to run it.
You will get a lot of help from the Forum

If you want to teach, You must learn first.

Good luck BoyOh

Thanks! I also got approved and I was wondering if you have a list and an estimate of around 10~ kits and the pricing tools and essential you guys would recommend. I was also thinking of making mostly robotics and if I could get bulk of motors. And the school has monitors with dvi, mouses, keyboards and might be able to get linix on the school pc's using a virtual machine. And can someone recommend some books on robotics. Thanks for everyone's help by the way!
