First Pi Project ideas? Limitations?

Hey Everyone,
I'm a software guy by trade who wanted to play around with hardware and learn Python in a more interesting way then "read a textbook". So I went and bought a Pi.
Now, I was foolish and didn't get a starter kit :/ and looking at all the cool stuff I could do I'm finding that to be a bit of a bummer. So if there is some kind of Pi kit without the pi itself, I'd LOVE to see it.
That Being said, I'd really like my first project to involve music and lights ^_^. I saw a few visualizer projects, but they all assumed I had a lot more equipment lying around then I do and I'd like to tinker with a breadboard and a few LED's before charging into anything to complexed. Anyone got any ideas? Affordable beginner "blinky light" projects?
Cheers!
