Newby need help for HT and server config...

Fri Oct 03, 2014 3:01 pm

Hi guys,
I've just bought my first Raspberry Pi B+ and the parcel is in its way... :)

I'd like to make a little HT server always running, for my home, capable to:
- run XBMC connected to my tv via HDMI
- Download (aMule Adunanza, Torrents...) stuffs in background
- Share public stuffs to all devices (WIn, MAc, iOS, Android..) connected to my LAN
- Share a sandbox for all devices conencted to my guest WiFi separated network. It will be grate if that sandbox will be accesible from the devices connected to the LAN too. (I made two separate wifi isolated network from my Netgear router so that I have one Network for the LAN and one for the guests with only internet access.)
- Offer a specific user's private home/space in my LAN so that I can use it as a backup space or personal server space.

The HW I'll have are:
- Raspberry Pi B+
- EDIMAX EW-7811UN USB WiFi Adapter
- microSDHC card Sandisc 32GB
- WD USB-3 external HD 1TB

The first questions are:
- Which OS do you suggest me? Raspian or Raspbmc or... ?
- Does it worth to use the 32GB micro SDHC or it will be better to use a 8GB microSDHC? How can I partition the 32GB microSDHC to use it in a better way? 2 partitions with system and home? Wich FS to prefer?
- At the moment the 1TB USB HD is NTFS partitioned and it contains all my Films, music and SW ... shal I reformat it in EXT4 or other FS?
- Where to put the public and private folder for the users: in the SD or in the external HD?
- Can you help me to install and configure my RP? :)

Thanks!

- Use Raspian as Raspbmc has some annoying customizations (Openssh replaced, etc)
- 8GB microSDHC class 10 will be plenty if you are putting data on an external drive.
- Use the default 2 partitions and ext4 FS
- Use LVM+ext4 on the USB HD.
- Put all data on the USB HD (you can mount --bind over any folder)

Thanks for response!
So it will be better to go with Rasbian?
Will I have some trouble to make xbmc stars automatically instead of the X interface and/or will I have bad performance watching full hd video while amule is downloading?
