Rpi for playing video mp4 files- not easy!

I have been unsuccessful trying to use omxplayer to play mp4 video files though I can play the test video supplied with the latest Debian squeeze image. What am I missing here? Do I need to bother about Codecs etc?

It needs to be H.264 mp4. mp4 is a wrapper, rather than a codec.
So maybe your mp4 files are encoded with something other than H.264? In which case you can't play them on the Pi for now. Maybe you could possibly transcode them (in advance - not in real time) with FFMPEG? (Just don't ask me how - can't answer that - world of difference between knowing something is possible and knowing how to do it )

I feel we need a forum dedicated to the problems of running HD film files.

I have no problem running 1080p files that are encoded using h264.

Just run raspmbc - Its running everything I throw at it - 1080p MVK, 1080p MP4 and even 720p (h.263) divx files which are not even decoded in hardware like h.264.

I feel you have to decide on what you want from the machine as hardware decoding of 1080p whilst running a debian system with full desktop in the background is really pushing it a bit for 800mhz (overclocked).

That's why I run two cards - One for raspbmc and one for experimenting with linux distro's

LOL only two?
I've got three for Debian at the moment, one for openELEC and one for Arch. (And a few spares)
openELEC is great for watching 1080p H.264
