Raspberry Pi Power Problems - it may be the lead..

Fri Jun 15, 2012 3:40 pm

I was totally gob-smacked to find out that some of the USB *leads* around with the correct connectors actually drop nearly 2v when used with a Pi. OK, they were very cheap direct imports - but they were quite short at only a metre. Simply swapping to a different (and actually almost twice the length) lead with the same wallwart increased the voltage at the Pi test points from ~3.5v to 4.9v.

You need to measure the output, on load, at the wallwart and at the Pi to be able to tell whether to blame the wallwart or the cable - or both, if you are having power problems.
