XMBC on already installed Debian OS?

Wed Jun 13, 2012 11:24 pm

Hi,

I've a RPi since 2 days and I saw on youtube a video with the XMBC center. So I wanted to install it too, but I don't know how to do this.

I have found the homepage of the creator of XMBC for Raspberry Pi, but it seems that I have to reinstall my complete debian system. Is it possible to install XMBC without reinstalling the whole system?

Thanks!

hi
i have done this and it was not to hard
this is what i did
do first boot with debian
then re image the sd card with the xbmc image don't delete anything just copy the new image over
and then run as normal
you will not have to do anything it will take a few moments for everything to be installed

hope this helps

Also I should download the XMBC image file and copy all with "dd" over my debian system?
Then reboot and it should work?

Thansk for your answer :)

I tried it 2 hours before and it works well. But XMBC overwrites the standard desktop and changes the terminal :(

...exactly - this is not what the OP is asking for. He wants to be able to use an existing Debian image and then install Xbox, but still keep the Debian OS.

'apt-get' may find a suitable installer.

try
sudo apt-get install xbmc
in the LX Terminal application (under accessories IIRC).

I have no idea if there is a currently available version in the repositories that it uses but it will ask you to confirm if it can find one.

It appears it's not yet available :(

I would also like to install XBMC in debian wheezy on the R-Pi.
But there are a few dependencies which I can' t seem to satisfy.
here is what I get when I try to install XBMC using aptitude

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xbmc : Depends: xbmc-bin (>= 2:11.0~git20120510.82388d5-1) which is a virtual package.
Depends: xbmc-bin (< 2:11.0~git20120510.82388d5-1.1~) which is a virtual package.

any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hi I am also having the same dependancy issue trying to install xbmc on existing wheezy image. would be a real pain to have to use xbmc one and setup my image from scratch. There must be an easier way.

XBMC on ARM is not yet in the official Debian respoitory.
You could try copying the binaries and .xbmc directories from a Raspbmc or Openelec installation - however, this is quite error prone.
There is a post on the Raspbmc forum about getting the XBMC nightly build from a location that has an ARM build ... you could try that.

The easiest way is buy another SD card & use that with Raspbmc (or OpenElec), however if you have more time than money it is possible to take a copy of the current SD card. You basically use 'dd' to copy the entire card. Then you can install Raspbmc, set it up and then take a copy of that with dd too.
Restoring a card can take 30 mins or so, much quicker than a reinstall, update & manual setup.

By the way, is the media centre XBMC or XMBC? Both seem to be acceptable to the folks here.. Lol

XBMC = XBoxMediaCenter

XMBC feels nicer inside my head for some reason. It has infected my ability to search for the correct term :)

here are the steps to install xbmc on existing debian arm

1. add deb ftp://ftp.deb-multimedia.org squeeze main non-free to /etc/apt/sources.list
2. execute apt-get update, you might see some error, ignore them as of now
3. execute apt-get install deb-multimedia-keyring
4. now its time to add GPG key, download the gpg key package from wget http://www.deb-multimedia.org/pool/main ... -4_all.deb
5. install the downloaded package dpkg -i debian-multimedia-keyring_2010.12.26-4_all.deb
6. again do the apt-get update
7. now install the xbmc apt-get install xbmc

Step 4 above, got shortened... Connect as one long line...

wget http://www.deb-multimedia.org/pool/
main/d/debian-multimedia-keyring/
debian-multimedia-keyring_2010.12.26-4_all.deb

This is the error I get

Are you sure that it is a good idea, installing software which is compiled for wheezy on Squeeze versions?

any updates on this? I really want to install xbmc on wheezy... As squeeze tells me xbmc is not able to start because the screen depth is not 24bit

It's the only way to install xbmc from deb sources. For now, i guess.
