I just need some simple web surfing, text mostly, forum posting (like now) and Gmail, I have a Canakit Ultimate, and it works great, except for browsing, any ideas?

GMail has a lot of JavaScript and background connections for example. Raspberry Pi doesn't have strong CPU so it's easy to get ~100% usage even with one application. Empty idle browser shouldn't generate noticeable usage.

There are alternative Browsers which are optimised to run on the Pi with Raspbian Wheezy, also running a browser without the Desktop loaded, Kiosk Mode, frees up resources..
