Does anywhere sell an SD card with a preloaded XBMC?

Sun Jun 10, 2012 5:37 pm

Hello, since getting a Pi it has sat on the coffee table after the first setup and test.
Without a media player I can see its going to sit there a tad longer.

Does anyone know where I can buy an SD card preloaded with XBMC?

Flashing a card with the linux images screwed my computer up so I am not doing that again and would rather just buy one.

Cheers.

Hi Mattylad,

You may try to have a look here http://www.raspbmc.com/download/
You still have to flash a card but It's using a python script.

You be best learning how to do it Matty as the distro's now are still not perfect so updating is essential imho . If you just wanted a cheap media player maybe you should have gone for an original Xbox with xbmc

OTOH, somebody with the appropriate skills and a working Pi with XBMC could easily accomplish both of the goals listed below, by making up such a card, arranging a (presumably large) price with the OP, and shipping it off to him. Win/win for everyone.

1) Making Matty happy.
2) Making a quick buck.

I tried making my own image, ended up making a mess of my laptop - I have early onset old farts syndrome and have a really big problem remembering things (I'm no spring chicken) so almost losing all my passwords was horrible.
All attempts at following the instructions to put the image on the SD card failed on this laptop so yes - I'd rather buy one :)

I already have a media player, this is for fun. Once I have it boxed and running then I can learn more.
But for now - its open the wallet time.

Joe is on the mark :)

Thank you. I wish I could do it, but I don't have a Pi (yet...)

If you buy a SD Card and send it to me along with a self addressed stamped envelope, I'd be more than happy to copy an image of your choice on to it. Reply positively and I'll pm my address to you.

Hello Thetap - thank you for your offer.
I am really grateful and may take you up on this, I will contact you at some point later - first I am going to kick my lazy school leaving son out of bed and get him to try and do it for me.

I would suggest using some kind of remote desktop app like logmein to give one of us control and we can do it remotely for you, but unfortunately even in such a lovely community as this I would be distrustful of anyone suggesting that :)

If you could run a virtual install of an OS to access and do the SD card I'd be up for that, but that's a lot of hassle again, which is what you're trying to avoid. I'd suggest simply buying one on ebay, prepared or go for the self addressed envelope offer above. I'd offer to do that too, as I suspect many of us would. It's only 10 mins work after all.

It's also worth putting a post in the "Wanted" section of the forum, again, saying where you're based.

Thank you for the replies.

I have been looking at a few things tonight, we have a commodore 64 that he wanted to put it in, but its going to cost 30 euro for a keyboard converter -so that wont happen. might be better if I just setup the c64 instead - thats more my kinda computer - I know basic lol
Am going to dig the lego out too.

This is supposed to be for the lad but he's lost interest with the time it took to get it and is more interested in counter strike etc now.
So methinks its all mine (until its going good enough for him to pinch it off me, but I have a 2nd coming yay).

Cheers for the comments.

Two things - one: kids are fickle. Keep quiet about it, pretend not to be awfully enthusiastic, and give it a while (and then show him something cool on it which you've completed already) and he may well respond. And two: you might want to hang on and wait until Sam Nazarko's Rasbmc is ready; Sam's only 18, and his XBMC is shaping up to look really, really nice.
