What's the best way to take the Pi on the go?

Thu Jun 05, 2014 5:57 am

What is the best way to have a mobile power supply for the RPi? I saw in MAKE magazine a guy made a tablet with the Pi and used this to power it;
http://www.amazon.com/10000mAh-Portable ... B009USAJCC

According to him and amazon, it outputs 5v and the author in make says 3A but amazon says up to 3A so I'm not exactly sure what the amps output is. This seems like a perfect battery solution for the Pi but I don't see many people using it in their Pi projects that are mobile. So what are some other alternatives that might work better for a mobile power supply?

upto 3A means that 3A are available, if the current demand is lower then it will supply less.

It looks like a good solution but the price would put me off (but I'm not looking for an ultra-miniaturised solution).

I'm not certain if the fact that it designed to be a battery charger will be an issue, it seems that it varies its own output in some way when you push the "charge button". this may not make it optimal for use with the pi.

I've used similar to power RPI's on the move

Agreed, I'm not a big fan of the price tag but it seems to be a perfect fit for my needs

Have they worked well?

yes worked fine
mine has 2x usb output [not sure on the mAH rating of mine - it's not to hand]
will power a RPi + camera for approx 16hours YMMV depending on what you want to do.
you probably cannot change it and power the RPi at the same time but that was not a problem for me ...

this one is half the price but has good reviews:

specifies that it can simultaneously output 1A (pi) and 2.1A (other devices)

Thank you! This is great.

In what range of amp does the pi operate? Like how many amps is too many and how little is not enough?

Model A runs at a minimum of 0.3mA + output, Model B runs at 0.7A + outputs, maximum is about 1A as the polyfuse will go if you pull more than that.

I've just ordered one of these to be my Dalek battery
