Transfer Image To New SD Card

Mon Jun 04, 2012 6:05 pm

Hello. So I recently received my Raspberry Pi, and the only SD card that I had that wasn't currently being used was only 2 gigabytes in size. I used it for several days, and then purchased a 16 gigabyte SD. I tried using the win32diskmanager to pull my old sd card image from the 2 gigabyte card, and then use that image on my 16 gigabyte card... But now my Pi sees the 16 gigabyte card as only being 2 gigabytes large! (I did kind of see that coming, but I was hoping it wouldn't...) Anyways, does anyone know of a way to increase the perceived size of my SD card?

Thanks,
John

This tutorial by Raspberry Pi Tutorials (Liam Fraser) covers the process quite well, this being the important bit. If you have access to a Linux machine then gparted should available from the software repo.

You don't need another pc to reside the 2gb partition to the full sd card size. it can be done all on the pi itself
Steve N – binatone mk4->intellivision->zx81->spectrum->cbm64->cpc6128->520stfm->pc->raspi ?

thanks itmpi - it would be good if someone could script that up so make it bomb proof (against the standard debian build for example)

Thanks for the help, everyone! I was able to resize my partition and now my Pi has roughly 10 times the storage space! (From 1.6 to 15.7!)

I assume that the (currently withdrawn) Fedora distro contains that as on first time boot it resized itself to use the whole card. Might be worth seeing if the relevant code/scripts can be extracted for use on other distros.

In the June issue of MagPi mag. (on page 6) Everything I did was the same except for the part that displays the partitions. Because I also used a 8 GB SD card, all the values were exactly the same. But the partition with the 1.55 GB had a hard line for a border and diagonal lines running through it. Is there reason to be concerned? I did everything on that page, and everything ran smoothly. Including checking the SHA1 number. Any thought? Don’t have the Pi yet, but I want to be ready.

Thanks, Your Pi friend, Tom
