Mains plug

Sat Apr 05, 2014 8:18 am

Hi all,

This is probably a dumb question, but would something like this work ok for powering a rpi? http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Search/se ... nformation

Looking more so at one of the USB outputs on it although can't seem to see any information on what voltage they output, although seeing as the images show charging mobiles and the like one would possibly assume it should be ok?

Ta!

James

As there's no mention of the available current from the USB sockets in the 'Full Product Information' section, it's impossible to know without finding someone who's successfully used one already.
Pi2B Mini-PC/Media Centre: ARM=1GHz (+3), Core=500MHz, v3d=500MHz, h264=333MHz, RAM=DDR2-1200 (+6/+4/+4+schmoo). Sandisk Ultra HC-I 32GB microSD card on '50=100' OCed slot (42MB/s read) running Raspbian/KODI16, Seagate 3.5" 1.5TB HDD mass storage.

It's not one I've tested/tried but if you've a "B & M" store near you I've tried a similar, 4-port, 5V 2.1A device (but that doesn't "pass-through" the "mains connection").
FWIW, more details of my measurements of UK USB power supplies ("good" & "bad") start at:

Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Painless, and you do have a leg to stand on perchance it doesn't work with a Pi. They work fine for me....

I do have a couple around *somewhere*. I seem to be good at putting things in places that i'll never find again! That and i have too few plugs for things, so a dual USB could means power to the Pi and phone charging, will still having use of the plug.

Anyway, just got back from picking one up and a quick look at the leaflet inside showing some promising info:

And if anyone is interested in the surge protection side of it:

Thanks for the replies though. Appreciated!

If you go that way ensure you get good quality USB leads. Cheap ones have too little copper in them and the voltage drop over the lead length completely negates the quality of the power supply. A cheap, thin lead probably won't matter for charging a phone, it will charge but just take longer, the Pi won't entertain it.
