External USB harddisk drive not recognised

Thu Mar 20, 2014 1:38 pm

Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago I bought myself the Raspberry Pi and started exploring it. I've been looking for answers on the internet and on this forum. The answers given do not answer my question/did not do the job.
Whatever I try the system still does not recognise my external harddrive.
Here are the steps I've taken:
- formatted the harddrive to EXT4
- connect my harddrive to an powered USB hub
- connect the PI to the same powered USB hub
I cannot see the external drive.

I've also connected another Freeecom external drive that has it's own powersupply and connected this to the USB hub; no success.

Am I missing something or doing something wrong here?

Regards, Motormuis.

What system are you running? We need more detailed diagnostics to help. What makes you so sure that the system does not see the hard drive? It might know it is there, and just not be automounting the file system.

Does it show up when you enter "lsusb" on the command line?

What is the output of "cat /proc/partitions"?

Ah, also, just making it ext4 does not create a file system, you also need to use the mkfs.ext4 command!

If the drive shows up in the above commands, running gparted GUI or parted or fdisk on command line can tell you if there is a file system and what the partitions are.

Sorry forgot to mention.
I have a Openelec system with Gotham Beta xbmc software.

I was not able to get to the command line to be able to enter any of the commands. I've looked for solutions on the internet, but all I found was that when running Openelec it is not possible to do a command line.

Is this correct? If not, how do I get to the command line?

Posted this in your thread on the XBMC forum too (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?ti ... pid1659067):
Yes, I saw your question on the raspberry pi forum. You didn't initially mention that you were also running Openelec which now explains why you posted here. The drive is most likely being recognized, but just not being automatically mounted. I'm not familar with Openelec to know how it handles external drives, so if they can't help you at the Rasberry Pi forum you might want to also try the Openelec forum http://openelec.tv/forum/generic-forum and they have a subforum called "Storage".

Or change the subject title of your post and add "Openelec" and maybe some of the users running that version of XBMC might be able to help you here.

Also to get to the command line on your Pi you can try using another computer and ssh'ing into the Pi. If you have a windows machine google for an app called "putty"...works great to ssh into systems.
