Does the pi support stereo audio in? I was thinking of using it as an audio server interfaced to a stereo system. Optical would be best but that would be a hardware project.

There are very small USB sound I/O devices on Ebay starting under $2:

At that price I can't believe it's much good, but I'd guess it at least sort of works. Not sure if they all use a standard audio driver or not.

I am hopping to use the USB for Wifi so I worry about bandwidth at that point. The Pi has stereo out so for speakers it will not be much of an issue just for inputs. Even then the bit task when all is done will probably be writing Device drivers for Windows, Mac, and Linux to use the remote speakers. Yes my house has all three devices.

If that sound device does work then you have a very cheap and low power APRS iGate.

id recommend against using one of those,
The voltage regulation on them is non existant,
Actualy caused my headphones to burn me from how hot they was getting
