XBMC video types

Sat Feb 15, 2014 8:30 pm

I am considering buying a Raspberry Pi solely for use as a media player.

I want to use XBMC but I have read that Raspberry Pi will only play H.264 video files.

Is this true?

How would I go about playing my AVI MPEG Xvid DivX files etc from a networked hard drive?

Thanks for any replies.

You might have to buy the MPEG-2 codec for DVD rips or
DVB recordings (depending where you are from). The VC-1 codec
is available for purchase , too (some BluRay rips and .wmv files).

AFAIK only old Xvid/DivX variants are unsupported , the newer
ones should be playable without an extra license at all ( those
codecs are similiar to MPEG-4 , so are already paid for
with purchase of a Pi).

Please keep in mind that you have to check whoch codecs
your files use , not their filename extension or "file type".
A tool like MediaInfo can help there.
