Initial Start Up

Sat Jan 18, 2014 4:39 pm

Despite all advice that this should be easy, I'm having problems getting past the first screen! I can get to the screen asking me to choose an OS but when I choose Raspbian, it tells me there isn't enough free space and wont let me choose install. How do I get past this one?

What version of NOOBs do you have? How big is your SD card? Make and model of SD Card? Did NOOBs come preinstalled or did you install it yourself? IF you put NOOBs on the card, what method did you use?

I have exactly the same problem; at the bottom of the screen, in red, it says 2.5GB required but only 2.3GB available. I am using a 4GB card, I shall check the NOOBS version tonight, presumably this may be causing the problem because I have just read that earlier version did not provide a big enough partition and V1.3.4 is needed. A friend (?) provided the card since I don't have the ability to write an SD card. If I select a smaller OS from the options then installation is ok. It took me a while to find someone with the same issue.

I have the same problem. I bought the complete kit from Amazon which was supposed to have a 8GB SD card with NOOBS installed. The card turned out to be only 4GB, but that is supposed to be more than enough. I downloaded the most recent version of NOOBS (v1.3.4) linked from the quick start .pdf which I downloaded. I formatted the card using the software suggested (in my case SDFormatter.app for Mac v 4.0). I dragged and dropped the contents of the NOOBS zip file onto the SD card. When I plug it into the pi, it runs an installation, and then displays the choice of OS, and I get similar numbers as mentioned in the original post (2.5 GB needed, 2.3 GB available). So, I cannot install Raspbian. Looking at the SD card using disk utilities, it has two partitions one with a 1.45 GB capacity, with 1.38 GB used, and the other with 33.6 MB capacity.
Do I really need an 8 GB SD card for this to work!!

Yes, the current version of NOOBS uses just over the amount that a typical "4GB" card has free, with the new Mathematica software its a very tight fit.
There are several posts describing how to delete some stuff so that it fits on all 4GB cards.

A simple solution is to use NOOBS lite, which doesn't carry the images for all OS's.
