New to the Pi

Hello everybody,
I have purchased a Model B Raspberry Pi.
I have connected it to my television, and inserted the 'NOOBS' card into the board, I connected it to the power,
and inserted a wireless keyboard receiver into the USB slot, and into the other USB slot I inserted Edimax EW-7811Un 150 Mbps Wireless 11n Nano Size USB Adapter to connect to my home WiFI. I have some questions as I am new to the Raspberry Pi and Linux itself, I wanted to learn how to program using the Raspberry Pi. When I turn the device on with all of the connections stated above, It asks me to pick an operating system. I chose the Raspbian because it was labeled as recommended. After the dialogue box saying the image was installed successfully, it powers down and then turns back on displaying a command line of sorts, then to a blue screen with options. I enabled booting to the desktop because I have no knowledge of the command line, then I pressed [ESC] and then typed 'startx' into the command line to get to the desktop. Once there, I looked around and tried to find a way to connect to the internet with my wireless adapter. After researching on the internet (on my other computer), I found that the latest version of Raspbian has the drivers for this particular adapter installed. I had no luck with the 'NOOBS' version of Raspbian, I think it is not the latest version, which brings me to my question; how can I install the latest version of Raspbian onto my Pi. Also, when I disconnect the Pi from the power, then reconnect it again, it asks me to pick an operating system again. I believe it was supposed to install Raspbian if I am not mistaking, (My 'NOOBS' card is still in the device). If anyone could help me resolve these issues it would be greatly appreciated. My last question is how do I fit the display settings to fit my television, it does not expand to all edges of the screen.
