I screwed up my networking and can't figure out how I did it

Fri Dec 27, 2013 8:33 pm

Well, I got a Pi for Christmas and installed Rasbian on it, and decided to give it a static IP address. I'm new to linux, so I followed some instructions online and added the lines about "address 192.168.168.150" and etcetera and restarted the networking service, but when I tried to ping anything, it just said "connect: Network is unreachable." I hadn't backed up the original interfaces file, so I reinstalled the OS, backed up the interfaces file, and tried again. It still didn't work, and so I restored the original interfaces file and restarted the networking service, and it still doesn't work.

So I screwed something up, but I can't figure out what I screw up, or how I screwed it up. Can you help?

What hardware is attached to your Pi? Answers depend on the setup. If too many devices are attached to the Pi that require more power than it can deliver, they will not work.

Could you please give some info on your network?
prefix - such as: 192.168.2.x
netmask
router-ip

as well as the output of this command:

Code: Select all

ifconfig
this command by the prints network configuration for all network devices.

On windows open a command window and get the output from an ipconfig /all command.

That will give you the strange incantations to use for your RPi

Here's a redacted example from my Win8.1 system

Code: Select all

C:\Users\Dougie>ipconfig /all

I recommend a ifconfig -a to see all of the interfaces.

Then a netstat -rn to see the routing table.
