Change to lower VGA resolution for Minecraft

Fri Dec 27, 2013 3:56 am

I bought another Raspberry Pi for my son to play Minecraft, and installed:
- raspberry pi, model B, 512MB.
- Used Wheezy 2013-12-20.
- Used HDMI to DVI converter cable with VGA LCD monitor, set to 1280x1024.

It all works fine. However, Minecraft runs in a window which is too small, and if I maximize the window, it fills the whole screen, but it's slow.

I was thinking, if it's possible to change the resolution of the X-window, let say 800x600 and run minecraft, it might show bigger. Like, on Windows, if I change to lower resolution, the screen fills the whole monitor, but everything looks bigger due to the resolution.

But I can't seem to find how I can change the resolution. I did search for the answer, but I am not quite sure how.

Could anyone please tell me how I can achieve this? One concern is, when I tested the HDMI->DVI cable with my old Raspberry pi (model B, 256MB RAM, 2012 version of Wheezy), the screen showed as 640x480 resolutin, but not filling the whole screen but small screen in the center of the monitor. How can I have lower resolution, but fills up the whole monitor screen? Is this even possible with Raspberry Pi?
