Lack of speed

Wed Dec 04, 2013 10:04 am

Is it me, or is the raspi insanely slow. Web browsing is useless. Everything takes minutes to start.

I installed Wolfram´s Mathematica and everything that has to do with GUI is dead slow. Plotting some simple sine and cosine lines works well. The underpinnings works. everything inside the terminal works good as well.

but everything that has to do with the linux guy is so frustrating.

so again, is it just me ?

You can always try some lighter web-browsers like gkreidls Minimal Kiosk Browser which supports HTML5 videos
from youtube and lots of other sites. Other than that , the Pi is essentially as fast as a computer from 1998.
If you are willing to risk it , you may be able to overclock your board (up to 1 GHz) .

The Pi is not a desktop PC replacement it was never advertised as one, it's meant to be a cheap low powered computer for DIY projects and getting kids interested in programming.
While the Pi may lack in areas such as web browsing it's perfectly fine for servers (ftp, web, proxy) or as a media centre (XBMC).

I have over clocked it to 900mHZ I think.

I have no problems doing python stuff or terminal stuff.

It´s just the GUI thingys.

thanks for responses !

Would changing the cpu/gpu memory split help?
We 'idiot proofed' the world, and now it's full of idiots!

More system RAM would mean less read/write swap space activity of SD Card although executing actual code would be no better due to slow processor core.
The GPU also needs a certain amount of RAM to decode HD 1080p videos, not a problem with a 512MB RAM Pi but for 256MB you may need to tweak the split to suit your needs.

If there is to be any speed improvements of the Pi the it needs an ARMv7 processor and at least a dual core. :)

unless you can wave a magic wand and give the PI a new CPU, it won't be a PI if it has an ARMv7 or more than one core. No new PI with another CPU is forthcoming any soon.

do you believe the startx interface can be improved via code optimisation, or are the code perfs considered as optimal.

Hum, it is more complicated than the way you image it.

I work for a graphic chips company (not in the software team)
our first opengl drivers were bought from a third party, and the perf were ok...

3 years later, we invested ressources to optimize the driver, and the perfs were woooooowww...

I have no visibility on how the linux driver works, so my question stands ;)

The foundation is investing a million pounds into various FLOSS
projects to improve performance and the overall experience.
And Wayland is one of them.

No , it not just you, the Pi is slow. I run a Linux PC as my main computer (nice and quick), but running a Pi as a web browser would drive me nuts. The Pi is a fabulous machine for some things, but web browsing (read anything that needs a GUI and doesn't involve the Pi's GPU) isn't one of them.
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......

Thank you for taking the time to find the written info that is backing your post.
I missed it (so much info on this forum/site that it is easy to miss important info)

Also consider the output resolution. If you are running at full 1080, then that takes a lot of resources. If you can drop it to 720 or lower, then you can improve the system performance a bit.

FYI,
even if WAYLAND seems to be the next big thing, people are still working on Experimental enhanced X driver (rpifb)_POST

Nice to know !!
