Booting issues

Fri Nov 22, 2013 10:15 pm

Hi all,

Just became the owner of a second RPi, having got one of the 256MB model B's around launch time, I finally upgraded to a 512MB model.

I've had no end of trouble booting up the new device, however I did eventually find that by applying some pressure to the SD card slot (as in maybe as much as you would use to install a heatsink on a PC motherboard kind of pressure) that the system would boot. I've tried some traditional bodges like electrical tape to hold it in place but it isn't enough; does anyone have any suggestions on (a) what is wrong, and (b) any more permanent fixes for it?

Regards,

The Binraider

from the boot problems sticky:
the card may not actually make good contact with the card holder, especially if you tried to force it in earlier. The cardholder or its pins may have been damaged. Check for broken plastic, or bent pins. The pins should all stick out equally above the surface of the plastic of the card holder. sometimes putting some pressure on the card helps.
if contacts do not stick out above the surface, because of loss of springiness, you could use a toothpick to lift them up a bit.
