Torrent Downloader

Thu May 17, 2012 11:36 am

Hi all,

Can I use the RPi as an torrent box, meaning can I set it up to download torrents?
If so, what OS and torrent programs can I use to do so?

Kind regards

Moved to Absolute Beginners from Off Topic because this is actually on topic.

Yes you can use the Raspberry Pi for bittorrent activities.

There's a myriad of clients available in the Debian repository (assuming you would like to run Debian), try running "apt-cache search torrent" in the terminal to see a list of available bittorrent clients.

I recommend Transmission, which features not only a GTK client but a pretty cool web client too.

Awsome,
thank you very much for your quick reply to my post!

One other thing, will it be possible to play 720p/1080p videos while downloading torrents?
Sorry for asking stupid questions, hehe
Can I use software like Tixati(Bittorrent client) and VLC?

I might be wrong, but it looks like they only provide binaries for i686 and x86_64. These will not work on the Raspberry Pi.

It being a closed source (proprietary) product too means that the community will not be able to compile and distribute Raspberry Pi compatible binaries. Sorry :-(

I can't comment on video related things yet as I haven't tried it myself. Perhaps another forum member can comment?

Thats a bummer :(
There is a version of VLC media player for Debian("squeeze"), will it not work on the Debian OS on the RPi?
What other player can I use to play AVI, DIVx, MKV and other media on the RPi?

I got rtorrent working on the 19-04 debian image. the issue I had was that after downloading 144MB of a 700MB file, the whole thing crashed. copying from one USB device to the Pi had the same affect, but XBMC did play what little I did transfer very well.

I'm waiting for updated images before worrying too much about it.

if you were using the 2 GB image and didn't resize it , it sounds like you filled the disk up. BTW vlc works but omxplayer is much better as its hardware accelerated.

stevepdp said that there are other torrent clients to choose from, but I will play around with a few and hopefully get one that doesn't give any problems, but ya, I will also wait for updated images.

I plan on getting a external drive that will be permanently plugged into the RPi to download torrents, because it should be much more power efficient that n computer running 24/7.

Thanx RussIT, I will give omxplayer a try!

I can't test this right now because I haven't got access to my Pi (really ought to consider an ssh server on it...) but I suspect that by running "sudo apt-get install transmission" on Debian you actually get the full GTK package.

If this is indeed the case, run "transmission-gtk" from a terminal window and it should launch.

Let us know what happens :-)

When you wrote the image to the SD card, did you re-configure the partitions?

Otherwise, you'll only be using 2GB out of the 16GB total capacity.

I think this tutorial by Raspberry Pi Tutorials (Liam Fraser) covers the process quite well, this being the important bit. If you have access to a Linux machine then gparted should available from the software repo.

Have you advanced on this?

I have tried Debian console only with rtorrent + lighttpd + php5 + rutorrent and my pi freezes after a while downloading

Thanks in advance

Transmission crashes the pi too.
Using the newest build from today.

The dl speed is decent and then it freezes the whole GUI, but Im able to go to the console and probably to do a shutdown.

I'm having the same problem:

No matter which image I used (I tried: pisces r3, joshun) and which torrent client (tried: transmission & deluge) the thing crashes

I've updated the firmware, have plenty of room (tried saving on both NFS share and locally -- same result). No effet.

I even changed the "vm.min_free_kbytes" param in /etc/sysctl.conf, enlarging / disabling swap etc.

Still freezes.

Any suggestions ?

TIA,

Florian
