Very particular request

Tue Oct 15, 2013 10:26 pm

Hi all,
Long story short, my flat block has been robbed a few times and I am worried I will be next. My land lord is useless, and if I can't do anything to stop the robbery I would like to help catch them. I heard from someone that a raspberry pi and webcam can be used as a very cheap but useful motion sensor camera.

I have a little knowledge of java and think this would be an excellent project. Can anyone point me in the direction of some resources to get started with this? I know next to nothing about the hardware side of things so the more detail the better.
Thanks everyone. Look forward to getting the bug and one day contributing to this great community.

As this is a potential / possible 'going to happen' problem, you might like to consider copying all images off site to the cloud as quickly as possible after they are captured, in case the burglars also take the pi and camera.

any connection to the internet should do it, along with some cloud/off site storage...

Yes this is exactly what I wanted to. I was hoping by emailing it to me, but perhaps uploading it to Dropbox is an option ?

I've done this exact thing with one of my Pis.
Webcam with motion and it emails me any captures immediately.

It'll take a lot of management though wont it - do you really want an email sent to you every time motion is triggered?
I guess you just have to remember to switch it on and off everytime you leave the flat...just like a burgular alarm ;)
I hope you don't have a cat/dog/lizard.....

Any sort of management can be scripted :D

If my phone or my wife's phone is connected to the wifi, motion activated emails are stopped.
A script is run every 2 minutes to check to see whether we are connected or not.
Once the Pi detects that we are not connected, it also sends me an email to tell me that motion alerting was started, that way if I don't get the email when I leave the house, I know that something has gone awry.
