is there a small OS, < 50MB for download?

Fri Oct 11, 2013 11:48 am

Is there any image < 50MB, that I can download that is an OS I can write to an SD card?

the smaller the better.

even if it hardly does anything, as long as it boots so I see it "works", that's fine.

NOOBS v1.3 'lite' is 20Mb. It's on the standard Downloads page.

Or there's https://github.com/hifi/raspbian-ua-netinst

Yes - that was my first thought, too. It's an OS...
That's very interesting. The other thing that came into mind (and something that I've been meaning to ask about for a few days now - it would be useful to me to be able to do this) is a net-boot. That is, have just a little bit of stuff on the SD card, then have the rest of the OS on a network drive. Like PXE, but, of course, PXE is x86-only.

Does anyone have any current pointers to a fully-working ("cookbook") method of net-booting the Pi?

P.S. To the OP, you could just put the contents of /boot onto an SD card and boot that. It will work - right up until it stops working (!).
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

Someone successfully booted the Pi with a NFS root, if that's what you're after.

Yes. Do you know where the recipes are kept these days?

http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 974#p78811 <== that was the thread where the guy did it originally, and where I saw it.

I haven't heard any more about it though.
