WiFi issue (FIXED) and dpkg error (not fixed)

Wed Oct 09, 2013 11:53 pm

***EDIT***
I HAVE FIXED BOTH OF THESE ISSUES USING THESE FIXES:
I fixed the internet error with my ralink adapter using
sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
then i added the lines:
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
(tab)wireless-essid YourEssID
(tab)wireless-mode managed
(tab)wireless-key xxxxx

The DPKG error i mention slightly later in this thread turns out to be a result of a corrupted image. I had to redownload a NEW image and reformat and burn to get it to work. I suppose the first one i downloaded was corrupted.

***EDIT***

Firstly I'm a noob to linux, so i need to be walked through setting up the above wifi dongle.
It is listed in lsusb as a Ralink rt5370, but it isnt listed in the wifi config program.
What should I do?

I've gone through a few tutorials which edit some config files via the terminal, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere. I can provide info as needed.

Some more information would be useful.
Which OS ?
Are you using a powered hub ?
Have you done a full update of the OS ?

What tutorials did you try to follow ? What were the results when you followed the tutorials ?

Rasbian
Yes, a four port 2.5mA powered hub
I ran apt-get update and install, but I have no internet so it did nothing. I am running the latest version of rasbian wheezy available on the downloads page at raspberrypi.org though.

Acctually i got it working, so sorry for the bother.
Now to only problem is that i get an error when using apt-get install or remove. The error has something along the lines of :dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting. I'm also unable to connect to the pi store. It says 'user interface not loaded.' (i think, i cant get on my pi right now).
I think it may be the way i burned my image. With the image writer reccomended on the downloads page, what should my settings be? I set it to quick and size adjustment on.

Best to get onto the Pi and paste the exact error message.
I would recommend at least a "apt-get clean && apt-get update" and see what happens afterwards

Here is the output for apt-get install xxxxx:

The sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get update run, but they dont seem to fix anything.

perhaps look for a file named statoverride and paste the contents in here.
I don't have a statoverride file, so I'm not sure where it is...

I'll be able to look for the file tommorrow, but for now can you say if the way i configured my wireless might have anything to do with it?
I used this tutorial:
http://raspberry-pi-notes.blogspot.com/ ... ongle.html
Starting from step 6.
Also, if you look at the error it says:
After this operation, 347 kB of additional disk space will be used
And:
Fetched 115 kB in 1s (90.4 kB/s)
Surely 115 kb or 347 kb cant be the real file size? They are surely too small.
Anyway ill post the file contents in about 16 hours, but I really have no clue what any of this means.

I do have enough space btw
And when i sudo nano that there crontab file, i get a bunch of ascii characters that look like the matrix had a baby

Which one?

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=186487
that's a thread i found about ubuntu with what seems like the same problem.
Could this(that thread's info) be translated into rasbian-commands so that i can fix my similar error?

You can use the same commands in that thread in raspbian, so give it a shot !

What do I have to change to make it work with my crontab error? For example, how would I translate the following to my situation?
I orinally saved /etc/group as /etc/group.default and then copied the group file from my old installation.

After reaching this problem and reading this forum post I noticed the error here states "unknown group `root`, where mine said `mlocate`. When did this:
# cat /etc/group.default |grep mloc
mlocate : x : 106 :
(I had to put spaces in above to stop text being converted to a smiley)
it was clear that I needed to put this 'mlocate' group back onto the system.

To fix it I did:

`cat /etc/group`
selected the groups I wanted to preserve for the new installation and copied those lins to the clipboard (user created groups are usually >1000
`cp /etc/group.default /etc/group`
`nano /etc/group`
pasted the lines into the bottom of the file and saved the new /etc/group
ran apt-get again and it's working again

Btw the contents of /etc/group is a bunch of squares on the firt line, followed by this line:
Indiecity:x:1000:pi

Re: WiFi issue (FIXED) and dpkg error (not fixed)

So I went into /etc/group and added the following group after using my substandard linux knowledge to vaguely interpret that post on the ubuntu forums I mentioned. I added the following line, thinking that it had to be there to give me some sort of permission for crontab:
crontab:x:1000:pi
So now the entire /etc/group file looks like:
$
indiecity:x:1000:pi
crontab:x:1000:pi
The indiecity thing was already there btw, I just used the number 1000 as a guideline ( i dont even know what it means.
Anyways, I must have made some prograss because I ran sudo reboot and the following was output when I ran sudo apt-get install thrust:
[email protected] /etc $ sudo apt-get install thrust
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
thrust
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 31 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B/115 kB of archives.
After this operation, 347 kB of additional disk space will be used.
Selecting previously unselected package thrust.
dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
files list file for package 'python-pifacecommon' is missing final newline
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
You'll see that the 'Selecting previously unselected package thrust.' is new, as is the error mentioning python-pifacecommon. I though perhaps this was only a problem with this packages, so I ran sudo apt-get upgrade which outputs:
[email protected] /etc $ sudo apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be upgraded:
cups-bsd cups-client cups-common curl dpkg dpkg-dev ghostscript gnupg gpgv

sysvinit sysvinit-utils tzdata
31 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B/21.1 MB of archives.
After this operation, 572 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y

Preconfiguring packages ...
dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
Any idea on what to do next?

It seems, like

Code: Select all

/var/lib/dpkg/info/python-pifacecommon.list
file is corrupted. It should be a text file with list of files to install.
Try to move it, like

Code: Select all

sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/info/python-pifacecommon.list{,.bak}
and then conitnue your upgrade.
